Everybody thinks singers are prima donnas. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. AD: It was sort of progressive rock. I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. AD: I never had any problem. I still feel like I'mlearning to play. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. Well, of course, everybody gets burned, but I was like a machine out there. Because it reminds me of so much. Sure enough, I was playing a gig and they just popped in and said, we're looking for a drummer and we'd like to know if you would like to move to Lon- don and join us." When they were uncertain. I came off stage feeling perfectly happy and wonderful, whereas I used to come off stage being on the very edge. Because before that last tourmy mother had died, during the making of Raised on Radio. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. You can only repeat the same structure over and over so many times before it gets monotonous. Yeah. lt made it really hard to keep up with the jazz. AD: I stay away from commercials. I really had to let it all go. And occasionally when I get up to Los Angeles, sometimes Ill go out on the weekend, and some of these clubs, manthis new generation in the clubs, man, theyre playing this song, and when it comes on theyre screaming it out to each other. Oh my God, its fantastic. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. I mean, back roads, where theres no cars, where theres nothing but coyotes. It feels better. It was a pretty heavy situation. leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. And theyve really liked it. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? I just kept my eyes on him all evening. Although it may not have been a good idea at the time, there is nothing wrong or demeaning with using a click track. And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. Cause we didnt sound alike. I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. We redid everything. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. And fall back into my life. Your playing tends to diminish from lack of work, so I formed my own band and worked it like Mayall did his. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. Theyd play amazing chord changes, and wed all try to navigate and try to help us be great with each other, and when we were done, Jon and I would take just, empty tracks, with the melodies in my head, to his house, and I would sit there at the coffee table and sing the melodies, and we would skull out lyrics.
