I disagree with a lot of the reviewers that claim that this blend lacks complexity. This would be good broken up and mixed with an overly tangy red virginia. I might jump that to highly recommended for the latakiaphiles out there. The turkish and burley add nothing. The flavor is earthy, smoky, leathery. Being the impatient person that I am, I wanted to sample this blend immediately. Hey its not your fault latakia, burley will help you in this kake. If this were my pirate ration, I'd have tossed myself overboard before the thieving and pillaging even started. Will definitely get more. Definitely now in my rotation. *5/30: Well- Seems tastes change- Latakias a little strong for me now, and I think I like it better as a side dish, rather than main course.Still quality stuff though. This is a smooth, robust tobacco, with awesome smokey , and nutty, and woody tastes. It is not biting my tongue at all, and I am puffing the Dickens out of the bacci. I just finished a sample of this that I have had for a while even though it was a pretty small sample. Both have huge ammounts of latakia. Get some. Having recently transitioned from cigar smoking to the hobby of pipe smoking (five months ago), I am still testing the waters of the masses of pipes and tobaccos available. So not only is this a must try for me but many thanks are owed to this blend and C&D. This tobacco is incredibly smooth and cool to smoke. It is a pretty intense smoke in my opinion. And even then it took me a while to admit there were other tobaccos present. It is unidimensional and stays the same throughout the smoke, again, not a bad thing. Yeah, I know that I am supposed to set out a bowl and let it dry overnight, butmy "compromise" was to only pack the loose crumbles that were in the bag. 2001-2023 STC Holdings LLC, a division of Mac Baren USA. b. the twelfth infallible imam was still alive and would return to spread his faith. Pirate Kake is indeed jam packed with this delightful Latakia, and it's apparent when you rub out some of this lovely cake. The pressed cakes are good looking, somewhat moist and tightly pressed. It was good at first, then it started to wear on me. A great value in bulk . I enjoy a good Balkan or English blend, but not this much Latakia. I've had the privilege of smoking a pretty decent variety of blends for my budget. I also pickup some oriental mustiness but unlike most English blends, this has zero balance the oriental is an afterthought that you pickup on the exhale but not when the smoke is in your piehole. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. At which point, even I had to admit that this was as intense flavor-wise as anything I had ever smoked. Heck, outside the pouch as well. A treasure you need to have in your cellar! It's my humble opinion that C&D has the absolute highest quality widely available Latakia on the market . Maybe it isn't well balanced, but for an after-dinner smoke, when you have feasted on smoked meats, it is delightful. It is more expensive, by about $15-20 a pound, but worth it. Updated 11/2/11- Well after a few months to breath and a different pipe ( if that is what one calls an Ozark Cherry Wood, original review was with a cob ), this blend is complex, without heat, creamy , cheezy and a keeper. Room note reminds me of a wood stove. After the first 1/3 it actually becomes boring. I have smoked through 6oz and have 4 left so we shal see how PK fairs in the next 6 months. I have to have a cup or two or three of coffee (or something stronger) with a bowl of this stuff. Its one of the best, Very robust and authentic tobacco english..strong..wow. As a former cigar smoker this was right up my ally. Try it! Highly recommended for Lat-Heads. PK is also a late night tobacco for me, my last smoke of the day. Fully recommended, but is only for people that fully enjoy Latakia and not for pipe begginers. It lacks that hint of perique spice that Nightcap has, but is darker and more smokey. Not bad, just different. It is not an all day smoke, but it IS my at least once-a-day smoke! I find the blend very relaxing and I am still working through the sample ounce I purchased. Smooth smoke from start to finish! I think if I had bought this in any quantity it would be a great blender with a dryer, easier burning, simple burley. :) Strength is mild to medium because you cant take a lot of vitamin N from the latakia or the oriental, maybe from the burley but I dont think its a lot of burley in this. English blends are my favorite treat. Avast! Still great stuff, but only for once in awhile, like after a charred steak dinner, or for when the urge for something immense and overpowering is desired. It is not the smoothest and certainly not the roughest but it is full of flavor and delicious in my opinion. Alright, so after a lot of virginia and VaPer and VaBur in this summer I really missed some good latakia so I decided to open this tin of Cornell & Diehls Pirate Kake. Enter 64 in quantity box for 4 pounds. It's complex because latakia in itself is complex, and you can taste this fine leaf without any bitterness from less than premium leaf or obstruction from too many other flavors. In my opinion it is inconceivable a mixture with 75% of Latakia because it is impossible to detect any other taste. It reminded me of smoking a burnt out matchstick or if you were to smoke the smoke off of a meat smoker. But I knew that would probably be the case going in. A taste of old England! In the tin you will find a dark square Crumble Cake, very easy to break apart and to load your pipe. If this has 75% latakia, I guess I could smoke pure latakia. Again, I cannot imagine an english lover not liking this C&D english. And, I mean nothing. I wouldn't even argue with reviewer,"Ecdycis 07/29/2012" on his "Menthol sensation", I know, it doesn't sound good but it's different and wonderful. You had better have a liking for Latakia with both of these blends, more so with PK that gives an almost oily taste. In pipelore, this IS an "L-bomb" to be sure. I took the advice from one of the other commenters on this page and decided to spruce it up with some rum. I smoked about ten pipe fulls and was ready to sue by the last bowl. Decrease Quantity of Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake Increase Quantity of Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake. SO GOOD! This is a very enjoyable smoke, full of smokey Latakia. Dont get me wrong, its certainly a lat bomb, and smokiness abounds, but its a soft, smooth, mild creamy smoke with a cedar like incense quality. It still made my tongue slightly numb, but then so does a shot of Mezcal, and I don't avoid that spirit. I will probably keep the tin to use as a blending tobacco, or maybe to use as a prank on unsuspecting pipe smoking friends. I don't get any depth or complexity, just a basic smokiness. I enjoyed the tobacco for what it's worth, but felt completely satiated for a while. The smell in the package is very bold and the taste is so bad. I am currently puffing on this blend, in my Ser Jacopo Delecta, and I find this blend to be very mild for the most part. I could very well see pirates smoking this out of their clay pipes as they flew the Jolly Roger. Dark and rich looking, begging to be smoked. I started smoking pipes a couple years ago with those pouches you could get out of stores and nothing against those tobacco are the people that smoke them just thought something was missing I finally found this smoking pipes.com website ordered a tin of nightcap and that was my 1st real true experience with great tinned tobacco and that was my 1st while moment smoking a pipe while now you can't get nightcap anymore and I was looking for that wow again and just happened to pick up a can of pirate cake and this is as close a second to the while that I 1st experienced the nightcap not saying the tobaccos are similar just saying that while factor has to be the 2nd best tobacco that I've ever tried and will order more and more this is just a great smoke everything you could want every feeling every emotion just a great all around smoking tobacco.
